County Durham and Darlington PCT: Cancer Awareness Research

Public Knowledge was commissioned by NHS County Durham and Darlington to assess baseline levels of cancer awareness in the region as one of the first CAM studies to be undertaken nationally.

In total 6,000 face-to-face street interviews were commissioned across 6 of the most deprived areas of County Durham and Darlington, specifically Darlington, Wear Valley, Easington, Sedgefield, Chester-le-Street and Derwentside with quotas imposed to ensure data collection from a representative spread of respondents. This was followed by the production of area level and area comparative reports which allowed NHS County Durham and Darlington to make decisions as to where to focus promotional activity.

Public Knowledge were then commissioned to undertake a second wave of this research in order to evaluate the social marketing measures implemented by NHS County Durham and Darlington in comparison to the baseline. We successfully conducted 1,590 face-to-face interviews across County Durham and Darlington in order to be comparative and produced a report comparing cancer awareness in the region between the two periods.
